Reflecting Back & Looking Forward: Meaningful Milestones at CX Since Breaking Ground

November 7, 2019

Two years ago, we launched “Cambridge Crossing,” also known as “CX,” and it is amazing to think of the connections we’ve made and milestones we’ve celebrated since then. We have had the pleasure of establishing relationships with the meaningful organizations and people that make the community so special and are so very thankful to have this opportunity to build a new and vibrant place together. So on CX’s second anniversary, we’re looking back at some of our favorite memories and greatest accomplishments and sharing a few highlights. Since breaking ground on CX in 2017 we have:

Celebrated NINE Milestones for New Buildings that will Shape the Neighborhood
On October 19, 2017 our neighbors, partners, friends, and elected officials came out for the official groundbreaking of Cambridge Crossing and the first science and technology building at 222 Jacobs Street. In order to make the occasion even more special, we enlisted a group of students from the Cambridge-based innovation school NuVu Studio to re-imagine what a groundbreaking could look like. The result – a steampunk-inspired, groundbreaking tandem bicycle that the students designed and built themselves, rode into the event, and used to ceremoniously mark the beginning of this new home for brave ideas.

Since then, we have broken ground on six additional buildings, including a standalone retail building at the heart of CX (“The Shed”) and our first residential building.

Completed the LARGEST Continuous Concrete Pour in Boston History
To “top if off,” just this year together with John Moriarty Associates and many partners, we completed the largest continuous concrete pour in Boston’s history, laying the groundwork for a 510,000-square-foot state-of-the-art lab building at Parcel G (350 Water Street), soon to be home to Sanofi.

Introduced FOUR Innovative New Tenants
Since launching CX, we have been thrilled to announce four world-class tenants that will call Cambridge Crossing home. This dynamic mix of innovative life science, tech and retail includes:

/ Philips, which will open the doors at CX to its new North American Innovation Center in early 2020;

/ Sanofi, Massachusetts’ largest life science employer;

/ Cerevel Therapeutics, a cutting-edge biopharmaceutical company;

/ Will Gilson, a nationally renowned local restaurateur who will bring an innovative multi-concept approach to retail, comprised of an all-day café, a full-service restaurant, a cocktail bar with a rooftop terrace overlooking the Common at CX, and private dining

Renamed TWO Streets Honoring Pioneering Women in Cambridge
At CX, we are committed to honoring the past as we build the future and an inclusive new community, which is why the unveiling of Jacobs Street and Morgan Avenue was a particularly meaningful moment. Alongside Cambridge City Councilor E. Denise Simmons, descendants of Gertrude Wright Morgan, the Cambridge Historical Commission and community members, we paid tribute to two prominent African-American women involved in the women’s suffrage movement with local ties to Cambridge, Harriet Ann Jacobs and Gertrude Wright Morgan. We were honored to recognize the legacy of these two courageous women in our community while working with the city to help ensure future generations learn from their legacies.

Became the FIRST “Wired Certified” Neighborhood in New England
Reflecting CX’s commitment to creating a forward-thinking environment for today’s entrepreneurs, researchers, innovators, and visionaries to call home, Cambridge Crossing became the first in New England, and second in the country, to receive a Neighborhood Certification by WiredScore. Cambridge Crossing’s communications infrastructure will establish premium connectivity in each of the individual assets that make up this new neighborhood and is expected to assure tenants and residents that connectivity and cutting-edge digital infrastructure exists between buildings and all public spaces. This level of interconnectivity is aimed at providing the seamless digital experience today’s customers demand, both inside and outside of office space.

These are just a few of the highlights from the past two years that we are incredibly proud of and are excited for what’s to come at CX. All of this could not have happened without the support of the cities of Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston, our neighbors, and the amazing designers, architects, engineers, contractors and partners that we work with every day. We are excited to create even more memories at CX in the years to come! Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram @CXCambridge. Sign up for emails by filling out our contact form.
