City of Cambridge and DivcoWest Partner to Bring CX HERStory Art Installation to City Hall

The City of Cambridge and DivcoWest, a national investment and development team behind the destination neighborhood and innovation hub, Cambridge Crossing (CX), are bringing HERstory: A CX Collection of Cambridge Trailblazing Women to Cambridge City Hall in celebration of Women’s History Month. The HERStory portrait collection will be displayed on the first floor in city hall until April 2 and includes a series of panels showcasing six amazing women all connected to Cambridge. Initially unveiled at The Shed at Cambridge Crossing in June 2022, the Collection has been a key feature within the CX community, highlighting Cambridge’s history in innovation, those who have made an impact on the future of all our lives, as well as showcasing the importance of art as a defining feature in public spaces. HERstory honors the legacies of six women, celebrating their accomplishments and powerful contributions to history in Cambridge and beyond. Those honored include Amelia Earhart, Gertrude Wright Morgan, Harriet Ann Jacobs, Julia Child, Katherine “Kittie” Knox, and Maria Louise Baldwin. “We are proud to highlight the meaningful role these women had in our community and look forward to welcoming the public into City Hall to view art created by the talented teen artists from Artists for Humanity,” said Sumbul Siddiqui, Mayor of Cambridge. “Women’s History Month is a yearly reminder of the progress made, and work yet to be done as we continue to build stronger, more equitable communities. We appreciate the opportunity to partner with the Cambridge Crossing team to extend the reach of this powerful exhibit.” Commissioned by DivcoWest, HERstory was developed and curated by Artists for Humanity (AFH). Each portrait was researched and created by teen artists of AFH, offering an opportunity to interpret the powerful contributions and community impact of these local women leaders through a contemporary lens. An intimate ceremony and community celebration will be held on March 23rd with special guest speakers including Cambridge Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui, former Mayor of Cambridge and City Councilor, E. Denise Simmons, the great, great nephew of Gertrude Morgan, James Spencer, and author Lorenz J. Finison, who detailed some of Kittie Knox’s experiences in his book Boston’s Cycling Craze, 1880-1900. “From the day we unveiled HERstory at CX, we’ve emphasized the meaningful impact art installations can make in our neighborhoods and the inspiration they can provide,” said Tina Snyder, Senior Director, and Head of Marketing at DivcoWest. “We are proud to share this Collection at Cambridge City Hall in honor of Women’s History Month, and strive to create opportunities for thoughtful reflection, engagement, and celebration of those in our community through art.” The six featured women are also the inspiration for street and open space names throughout the CX neighborhood. This thoughtful community-driven approach connects visitors, residents, and workers with forward-looking and influential women leaders from Cambridge’s past, reinforcing the importance of celebrating those in our community who have made a positive impact for us all while creating equitable and inclusive neighborhoods.
