Celebrating Earth Day at Cambridge Crossing: 5 Sustainable Facts about the CX Neighborhood

CX has combined elements including dynamic urban areas and green open spaces which bring the best of nature to East Cambridge. Through sustainable engineering, the CX neighborhood creates an ecologically resilient community that benefits from a better quality of life. As CX continues to build a thriving innovation ecosystem while protecting natural resources for future generations, here are the top 5 sustainable facts about the CX neighborhood. 1. Restorative Spaces CX is home to 11 acres of open space, with 5 acres of connected green space anchored by a pond. Referred to as The Common at CX, this green space includes native shade trees, grass, and other plantings. The Common at CX offers bike paths and pedestrian walkways that connect to the Charles River Reservation, including North Point Park, only a quarter mile away. 2. A Healthy Ecosystem CX is home to 50 unique species of native trees, shrubs and other plants that help to clean the air, sequester carbon, reduce the heat often experienced in urban environments, and provide habitat for birds, insects, and other wildlife. 3. Sustainable Mobility & Access Active transportation is at the core of CX’s accessibility goals. We are proud to be a cyclist paradise. CX is connected by 48 miles of both on-road and separated bicycle lanes. The best part? Visitors, residents, and workers have access to on-site bike sharing, parking, storage, and repair facilities, making cycling an easy choice as a preferred transportation method. 4. Conserve Resources To reduce waste and reuse natural materials, CX reused large granite blocks salvaged from the site and transformed them into what today are seating benches, fountains, low walls, and other landscape features. A total of 2,000 excavated blocks were cleaned and repurposed. 5. Working Landscape With a focus on stormwater reuse and reducing potable water demand, CX’s outdoor custom-built features collect rainwater and conduct it to cisterns that provide water for landscape irrigation. We’re committed to making Cambridge Crossing a greener, better place for all!
