Cambridge Crossing Opens New Community Cycle Center and Pedestrian Station Plaza Honoring Local Female Trailblazers
CX Cycle Fest launched the opening of the Kittie Knox Cycle Center and Alberta Scott Station Plaza designed to support alternative transportation and cycling.
CAMBRIDGE, MA., May 18, 2023 – DivcoWest, the national investment and development team behind the innovation hub,
Cambridge Crossing (CX), announced today the opening of two new community spaces at CX, Alberta Scott Station Plaza, and the Kittie Knox Cycle Center, each named after Cambridge trailblazers who persevered to break down racial barriers. Both open spaces are located at the gateway to CX and adjacent to the Green Line Lechmere Station at CX. In recognition of these openings, CX hosted a community celebration on May 17
th, and welcomed people from the neighborhood and beyond.
The Kittie Knox Cycle Center, named after East Cambridge resident and bicycle enthusiast Kittie Knox, is the first of its kind in Greater Boston and was developed with the daily commuter in mind. It offers a bike tune-up station, shower, restrooms, changing rooms, and lockers. The center was created by DivcoWest to encourage alternative transportation while providing solutions to make cycling a more convenient commuting option. Knox was a member of the League of American Wheelmen in the early 1890s and is known for being a prominent and accomplished African American cyclist who bravely confronted the era’s gender and racial barriers.
The Alberta Scott Station Plaza, named after Cambridge resident Alberta Scott, is situated at a main thoroughfare of the CX neighborhood and is an open space where visitors can relax, enjoy community events, wait for public transit, or simply pass through as they walk through the CX neighborhood. Scott was the first African American to graduate from Radcliffe college and the 4
th to graduate from a women’s college in Massachusetts. She is known for being an educator committed to teaching and providing opportunities for the African American community.
“Cambridge Crossing is uniquely positioned along the community multiuse path and between two MBTA stations. We wanted to create and promote spaces where everyone feels welcome, support the many modes of transit, and celebrate two amazing women who’ve made an impact in our neighborhood,” said Dennis O’Donnell, Senior Director at DivcoWest. “We look forward to continuing our support of the community, healthier lifestyles, and many transportation modes throughout the area.”
The new spaces launched during CX Cycle Fest on May 17
th. The celebration of the new spaces, Bike to Work Week and Bike Month included an exhibition with local cycling groups, REI’s Mobile Bike Shop pop-up, a MassBike Group Bike Ride, and a stationary bike spin class with Fit Life. Local vendors also participated, including the latest food concept to open at CX,
Bon Me. The event concluded with a celebration hosted by Lamplighter Brewing at CX.
The Scott Station Plaza and Knox Cycle Center are located at the Green Line Lechmere Station Stop and to the left of the REI store at 181 Morgan Ave in Cambridge. The two new open spaces join a collection of public access green space at CX, that offer year-round programming and activations for residents and visitors.
